What happens to your session

Noeta records your oral session so your instructor can review it. Here is exactly what that means and who is involved.

What is recorded

• Your voice, for every question: from the moment Noeta starts asking it until you finish your answer.
• The room. Anything audible where you are sitting while a question is asked and answered (including other people) is on the recording.
• Timing: how long you paused before answering, and sounds picked up in those pauses. Your instructor sees these as observations, never as an accusation.

Take the session somewhere you are comfortable being recorded. If that is difficult, tell your instructor before you start.

Who processes it

• Transcription: your recording is turned into text by a speech-to-text service.
• Analysis: an AI reads that text to help your instructor see whether you could explain your answers.
• Storage and hosting: the recording and report are stored privately. Your instructor can reach them, and so can a small number of people at Noeta, for the reason set out below.

None of these services use your data to train their AI. The full list of providers is available to your institution.

Is it used to train AI?

No AI is trained on it. Not the outside services listed above, and not Noeta’s own. Your session produces your instructor’s report, and nothing learns from it.

A copy of your recording is kept where people at Noeta can listen to it. Not to judge you or your answers, but to check whether we were right about the room. Noeta reports things like “another voice” or “typing”, and the only way to know whether it heard those correctly is for a person to listen and say.

That copy carries no name, no email, no score and no report. A reviewer cannot see who you are, and nothing they mark reaches your instructor or changes your result in any way. Most copies are never listened to at all. Every one is deleted on the same schedule as your session, and if your session is deleted sooner, the copy goes with it.

A person at Noeta may also read a short piece of your transcript. Beside each answer, Noeta notes the route your explanation took (that it named a mechanism, for example, or restated the question), and a person reads the question and your answer to check that note. That reading carries no name, and nothing from it reaches your instructor or changes your result.

How long it is kept

Your session is kept for about 8.2 months and then deleted automatically: the recording, the transcript and the report together. You can ask your instructor or your institution to delete it sooner, and they can do that at any time without our involvement.

Two things sit outside that schedule. Nightly backups of the whole service are kept for 30 days and then overwritten, so a session that was deleted can remain inside a backup for up to 30 days afterward. And the pages report anonymous page views to our host, Vercel: which page was opened, with session ids and link tokens removed, and with no cookies.

What your instructor sees

Your instructor sees the report and can listen to the recording. Noeta does not decide anything about you. Your instructor does. You do not see the analysis; that is for your instructor’s judgment.
